Explanations: About the research and what the results mean
Timber trade and woodprocessing industry/craft are the link between consumers and the forest or the region where the timber grows. Therefore they have a key role in combating trade with illegal or unsustainably produced timber.
The once trading or/and working with timber has profound information about the product: besides source of origin, technical features, prices and field of use, nowadays it is obligatory to know if the timber is sourced from legal and sustainable operations and also to insist on proper documentation proofing this.
The information shown on this website has been researched (and still is being updated) using a questionaire supported by extensive call-ins and visits to companies and shops. The information documents how trade and industry are tackling the problem of 'Raubbau' or unsustainable/illegal timber extraction and trade.
For documenting the results in a proper way, two parameters have been introduced: The 'Raubbau-Status' and the 'Transparency'. The first documents how the companies relate to the 'Raubbau' and what they do fighting it, encoded in colors as shown in the table below. The second parameter documents how the companies communicate their role in the context internally (workers, employees) as well as externally (consumers).
The information below is subjective, as subjective as impressions and experiences of costumers are, when they visit a store or talk to representatives of companies. The facts documented where researched in different independent steps: a letter describing the project as well as asking to return a questionaire was sent to all companies relevant. Most cases were followed up by call-ins and spot test in some stores.
The information below can't be 100 per cent guaranteed. If you find unprecise or wrong information, please report back. We will take your feedback as trigger for an additional look in the specific case. If you want send us a message and are representing a company you may want use the feedback-form for companies. If you are consumer and want send us your experiences relevant for the 'Raubbau'-campaign, please make use of the form for consumers.
